Introducing Elle, the star behind our social media platforms! ⭐

This week, we sat down to chat with Elle, a marketing executive who is one of BioGrad’s longest-serving staff members. We’d like to introduce you to the person overseeing our social media strategy, PR and events and share her journey from apprentice to marketing executive.

“At the age of 17, I found myself working in a children’s play centre with no clear direction or sense of purpose for my life. Despite this, I was determined to pursue something novel and unique in my career.”

While searching for her next step, Elle came across an application for an apprenticeship at BioGrad. Not knowing much about apprenticeships, she conducted some initial research and quickly realised it was the challenge she had been looking for. She contacted Dr Kenny, applied, and was offered the role on the same day.

Elle began her two-year apprenticeship at the City of Liverpool College in October 2017. Her first day at BioGrad was a whirlwind, filled with friendly staff and exciting opportunities to get involved in a wide range of activities.

During this time, BioGrad Education was the leading arm of the business, which meant Elle had the chance to travel across the country with Dr Kenny. Together, they visited top private schools and universities and attended New Scientist Live, one of the largest festivals showcasing scientific innovation. These experiences helped Elle build confidence, interpersonal skills, and a deeper understanding of the medical and scientific fields.

Throughout her apprenticeship, she gained an appreciation for the number of students aspiring to pursue careers in STEM and saw first-hand the impact of BioGrad’s course offerings.

Elle completed her apprenticeship with distinction and was offered the role of social media executive, which she happily accepted.

In 2020, during the pandemic, Elle became part of the core team that helped BioGrad pivot from an education provider to a diagnostics provider. Initially supporting partner schools to stay open, the company later extended its gold-standard testing services to the wider public and to businesses across the UK.

During quieter periods, the Education team developed new programmes, including pre-med Diplomas, Certificates, and specialist bootcamps. As restrictions eased, BioGrad once again welcomed hundreds of students back into their laboratories.

Today, BioGrad has evolved from COVID-19 testing to biobanking while continuing to deliver exceptional healthcare services. BioGrad Biobank now provides long-term cell banking for NHS trusts, academic researchers and UK families — at a fraction of the cost of many other providers.

Elle reflects on her journey with pride: “I’ve been working at BioGrad for more than 5 years now. When I applied for the apprenticeship, I never thought I would accomplish so much. I am grateful that I took a chance on myself and that BioGrad gave me an opportunity.”
