Q: Dr. Jamie, can you share with us what initially drew you to pursue a career in medicine?

A: It all started when I was around 11 years old. My great uncle was hospitalized, and witnessing the care he received left a lasting impression on me. I was impressed by the dedication of the healthcare professionals, and from that moment, I knew I wanted to become a doctor.

Q: How was your experience in medical school?

A: Medical school was a transformative experience for me. Despite the demanding schedule, I found it incredibly rewarding. It felt like a full-time job, but one where I had the opportunity to learn fascinating concepts and gain hands-on experience in various specialties.

Q: Could you tell us more about your journey after graduating from medical school?

A: After completing medical school at Newcastle, I embarked on my foundation years (F1 and F2). Initially, I had my sights set on orthopedic surgery, but after trying it out during my foundation program, I realized it wasn’t the right fit for me long-term. This led me to explore different avenues, including locum work across various specialties and pursuing a master’s in public health.

A: My journey eventually led me to a role in education, which has been incredibly fulfilling. Teaching has always been a passion of mine, and I’ve had the opportunity to shape medical education programs and work closely with aspiring medical professionals. Joining Biograd allowed me to further explore this passion and contribute to the development of future healthcare leaders.

Q: Outside of work, what are some of your interests and hobbies?

A: Outside of work, I enjoy staying active through sports like football and hiking. I’m also a music enthusiast and love discovering new artists. Additionally, I have a penchant for cooking and exploring different cuisines. Oh, and I’m a bit of a car and shoe enthusiast too!

Q: Can you share more about your involvement with the COVID testing lab and your experiences abroad?

A: During my freelance years, I had the opportunity to work with a COVID testing lab at Liverpool Airport, which was a unique and rewarding experience. I’ve also had the chance to travel abroad for medical electives, conducting research in Ghana and gaining hands-on experience in the United States, including working with sports teams.

Q: What’s next for the pre-medical courses you’ve designed at Biograd?

A: We’re continually refining and expanding our pre-medical courses to ensure they meet the highest standards and provide aspiring medical professionals with the best possible preparation. Our goal is to obtain OFQUAL accreditation and explore opportunities to make the courses more accessible to students from diverse backgrounds.
