The six-week program is designed for in-depth learning, offering a comprehensive exploration of six key modules. Each module will be covered over a five-day period, ensuring a focused and intensive learning experience. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect:
The Biomedical Science module equips you with a comprehensive set of practical laboratory skills essential for the field. You’ll learn everything from performing blood typing and pipetting with precision to maintaining sterile technique and operating an autoclave. The module also delves into microbiological techniques, teaching you how to grow and maintain bacterial stocks, perform microscopy, and utilize diagnostic tools like Gram stains and ELISA assays. Additionally, you’ll gain experience with advanced molecular biology techniques like RT-qPCR, allowing you to analyze results and gain valuable insights.
The Cardiac and Pulmonary module provides a comprehensive foundation in these vital bodily systems. You’ll delve into the intricate details of cardiac anatomy, and then translate that knowledge into clinical practice by learning auscultation techniques to differentiate normal and abnormal heart sounds. Electrocardiogram (ECG) skills take centre stage, where you’ll not only learn to interpret existing ECGs but also gain hands-on experience performing them. Understanding the root causes of various cardiac diseases equips you to contribute to patient care plans, including crafting cardiac rehabilitation programs. The module then expands to the respiratory system, teaching you how to conduct a respiratory examination and interpret basic chest X-rays. By building a deep understanding of pulmonary anatomy, you’ll be prepared to handle emergencies with the critical skill of CPR.
The Emergency Medicine module equips you with the essential skills to handle critical situations. Master the fundamentals of basic life support, including CPR, choking maneuvers, and recovery positioning. Hone your communication skills through simulated OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Examinations) where you’ll confidently take patient histories. The module progresses to practical procedures, teaching you venipuncture using various needle types, ECG interpretation for cardiac emergencies, and treatment plan development. You’ll gain experience administering medication via cannula and delivering IV fluids. Mastering physical examination techniques includes assessing the lungs, heart, and abdomen, allowing you to identify concerning signs on basic X-rays and administer appropriate care in abdominal emergencies. The module even covers suturing and wound care, preparing you for a range of situations. Finally, you’ll learn the crucial ABCDE assessment method, a cornerstone of emergency department evaluations.
The Medical School Preparation module goes beyond the science, equipping you with the essential skills to thrive in the application process and beyond. Craft a winning CV that showcases your strengths, and gain the confidence to ace mock interviews with personalized feedback. Prepare for those common interview questions and develop a professional demeanor that leaves a lasting impression. This module also delves into effective learning strategies, teaching you how to tackle problem-based learning sessions with ease. The Orthopaedic Care module dives deep into the musculoskeletal system, the foundation of movement in the human body. You’ll gain a strong understanding of how muscles and bones work together, exploring joint function through various methods like ultrasound examinations. The module delves into bone development, from the impact of nutrition to the management of congenital disorders. Trauma isn’t left out, as you’ll learn about common musculoskeletal injuries and even gain practical experience applying a backslab/plaster cast. Understanding different types of bone fractures and potential risks associated with them is also emphasized. The module even ventures into advanced techniques like intraosseous cannula insertion, equipping you with a comprehensive grasp of orthopaedic care.
The Medical Ethics module transcends the realm of science, equipping you to navigate the complex ethical landscape of healthcare. You’ll gain a deep understanding of what medical ethics entails, delving into the principles that govern responsible medical practice. This module empowers you to confidently discuss and debate challenging issues with your peers.
