Level 3 Biology Practical Skills Expert - Delivery and Assessment
Description
To deliver the Biology Required Practical work to A-Level students and to assess the Common Practical Assessment Criteria (CPAC) and the use of specific Apparatus and Techniques. During the sessions, recording of the progress that learners make is expected so that practical endorsement outcomes can be communicated accurately to consortium examination centres and awarding organisations. There may also be an additional opportunity to upskill and assess Adult Learners who directly or indirectly support Level 3 Biology practical work teaching and assessment in schools, colleges and tuition centres.
There will be a full day of training provided to support an understanding of the current A-level Biology practical work assessment specification requirements that are common to awarding organisations AQA, Pearson Edexcel, Eduqas and OCR.
Reports to: Curriculum and Assessment Education Lead
Place of work: Recruitment to work in one of the following areas: Liverpool, Birmingham, Oxford, Newcastle, London and Plymouth
Role-specific responsibilities
1. Teaching and Assessment
Deliver small group teaching from 1-15 learners.
Adhere to policies and procedures in accordance with company standards.
Keeping learner records of progress made against assessment criteria.
Attend training and meetings.
Undertaking administrative duties.
Test course equipment and troubleshoot any problems so that practical’s are fit for purpose and are adapted accordingly.
Ensure learners are provided with enough opportunities to meet the required standards in order to complete the assessment successfully.
Complete assessments of learners in line with regulatory requirements.
2. Health and Safety
Review all related, provided risk assessments.
Have overall responsibility for health and safety within the practical work sessions.
Ensure learners understand and follow health and safety guidance.
Ensure all learners complete the relevant health and safety assessments.
Person Specification
Qualifications, Training & Knowledge
BSc in Biology or a relevant science teaching degree
A Level Practical Endorsement Certification (To be completed if successful)
Understanding of the British education sector
Qualified teacher status and/or experience of teaching in the Higher Education sector
MSc or PhD in a relevant science subject
Skills & Behaviours
Strong communication skills with proven ability to use them to convey complex information to learners and colleagues
Ability to take initiative and work without supervision
Confidence in making decisions within area of expertise
Able to work efficiently and co-operatively as part of a team
Ability to work calmly under pressure, and adapt readily to changing circumstances
Ability to review documentation and make amendments appropriately within set guidelines
Strong negotiation skills, with ability to reach agreements
Ability to analyse and solve problems
Experience
A minimum of 2 years’ teaching experience
Experience of working with laboratory equipment
Experience of writing risk assessments
Experience of preparing chemical solutions
Experience of assessing A level Science practical’s
Experience of working in a multi-cultural setting
Experience in quality assurance
Experience of working with SEN learners and adapting lessons to their needs
Circumstances
The post requires a flexible approach and willingness to carry out working hours across set teaching schedules and venues.
