How Liverpool’s Bootcamp Opened Doors to My Career in Science

When I was studying for my master’s in biomedical sciences at the University of Hull, I felt like something was missing. While I loved the theoretical side of my studies, I realised I hadn’t gained as much hands-on lab experience as I’d hoped. I wanted to feel more confident handling equipment and techniques that are essential in the workplace. That’s when I discovered BioGrad’s Skills Bootcamp in Liverpool – and it turned out to be the turning point in my career.

Gaining Confidence Through Practical Skills

The 10-day Skills Bootcamp was exactly what I needed to bridge the gap between academic study and working in a real lab. Over the course, I learned so much, including pipetting, Western Blotting, PCR, microbiology, and ELISA. These are all techniques I’d read about in textbooks but had never been able to practise confidently.

The lecturers were incredibly supportive and encouraging, guiding us through each skill step by step. We also did daily self-assessments, which helped us identify gaps in our knowledge and track our improvement. By the end of the week, I felt like a completely different scientist – more capable, confident, and ready to take on the challenges of a career in research.

Beyond the Lab: Career Development and CV Workshops

One of the unexpected highlights of the Bootcamp was the CV workshop led by Natalie Hough. During this session, we learned what recruiters look for and how to tailor our CVs to science roles. It gave me a clear understanding of how to present my skills and achievements, which proved invaluable when I applied for my current role at BioGrad.

The weekly feedback sessions were another key aspect that helped me prepare for the job market. By discussing my strengths with lecturers, I felt equipped to articulate them during my interview for the lab technician position at BioGrad.

From Hull to Liverpool: Starting My Career at BioGrad

Shortly after completing the Bootcamp, I moved from Hull to Liverpool to begin my new role as a lab technician at BioGrad. Starting at BioGrad has truly been a dream come true. The team here is so supportive, and I’ve had the opportunity to continue learning and growing every day.

As part of my role, I now assist with delivering Common Practical Assessment Criteria (CPAC) and Practical Endorsements, which are vital for A-level students pursuing science careers. Helping young learners develop their lab skills feels like a full-circle moment – I get to pass on the same knowledge and encouragement I received during the Bootcamp. If you’re interested in learning more about CPAC and Practical Endorsements, you can find all the details here.
