Laboratory technician
Description
The post-holder will undertake laboratory duties to support subject-specific practical work course teaching and assessment for BioGrad Education
Reports to: Science Education Lead
Place of work: Recruitment to work in one or more of the following areas: Liverpool, Birmingham, Newcastle, York, London.
Role-specific responsibilities
1. Teaching and Assessment
- To maintain the cleanliness of laboratories and equipment.
- Support teaching colleagues in preparation for A-level Science practical work delivery.
- Preparation of chemical reagents when relevant.
- Completion of regular stock checks and communication with BioGrad Education should stocks be running low.
- Collection of laboratory deliveries.
- Waste management.
- Working in the laboratories assisting learners to perform various lab techniques when appropriate.
2. Health and Safety
- COSHH awareness.
- Access to and the understanding of provided Risk Assessment documentation.
- Following all laboratory safety guidelines.
- Adhering to PPE protocols.
- Work in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures, Health and Safety guidelines, ISO standards and COSHH guidelines.
- Understand and perform procedures for spillage of chemical and biological material, and fire alarm procedure.
- Engagement with and completion of training when required.
- Maintain stock levels of all PPE and equipment.
- Responsible for the health and safety of learners in the laboratories.
Person Specification
Qualifications, Training & Knowledge
Essential
- Minimum Grade 5 in GCSE Science, GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English qualifications (or equivalent) and at least one A-level Science qualification
Desirable
- Level 3 or 5 Laboratory Technician qualifications (or working towards) or equivalent
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant biological science.
