Stepping into a bustling, fully-equipped laboratory in Liverpool’s Wavertree Technology Park for BioGrad’s Skills Bootcamp was truly an eye-opener. I work from our office in Wavertree Technology Park, but this was my first real experience in the labs. I work on BioGrad’s marketing team, and I signed up not only to gain a better understanding of what our Skills Bootcamps are all about but also to experience what it’s like to learn these essential skills from the ground up. Over a rewarding ten days, I had the privilege of seeing the Skills Bootcamp experience from a participant’s point of view.
Getting Hands-On with Lab Techniques
The course kicked off with a warm welcome from Dr Kiran Riasat, one of BioGrad’s lecturers. Almost immediately, it was clear why this Skills Bootcamp is so popular—every technique is covered in detail, from understanding the theory to applying it practically, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance. It was incredibly encouraging to see participants jump right into techniques like ELISA (conducted by Dr Colette Kelly) and PCR (conducted by Dr Stephen Lynch).
I saw firsthand how participants quickly learned to handle samples, measure accurately, and understand the science behind each step. And it wasn’t just about ticking off tasks; these techniques are essential for future careers in research and diagnostics, making the experience all the more valuable. My course comprised of people who were in employment and their employers wanted to further their skills to contribute towards their day-to-day tasks. It was incredible to see the students making sense of the practical steps in every technique and using their experiences in their roles to coordinate steps and reasoning.
Building Job-Ready Skills with Western Blotting and Microbiology
Two other significant areas covered in the bootcamp were Western Blotting and microbiology, which I found fascinating. Again, watching participants handle these sophisticated techniques highlighted how essential it is to be well-versed in modern lab procedures. Dr Yetunde Adegbite provided practical advice on best practices, helping participants develop a systematic, careful approach—a vital trait for anyone aiming to work in research.
The microbiology segment with BioGrad research scientist Marco Romero was also an interesting segment of the Skills Bootcamp. Microbiology skills—such as culturing and handling microorganisms safely—are fundamental for those pursuing careers in medicine, microbiology, or any related field. Learning these procedures in a safe and supportive environment allowed participants to build confidence, especially since they had the freedom to ask questions, make mistakes, and ultimately improve with guidance.
A Supportive, Collaborative Environment
One of the aspects I enjoyed most was witnessing the atmosphere of support and camaraderie that defined the experience. The group was diverse in academic and employment experience, with people from various science backgrounds, and the lecturers created a welcoming space where everyone felt comfortable to participate and learn at their own pace. All students were highly experienced and eager to share their knowledge. I watched as participants helped each other, exchanged tips, and shared excitement over small successes. This spirit of collaboration extends beyond the Skills Bootcamp and helps participants feel part of a wider community of scientists and researchers. The Skills Bootcamps are an excellent way to start a network in the science and research community.
The lecturers were excellent, too, going above and beyond to ensure each participant understood not only the “how” but also the “why” behind each process. They shared insights into real-world applications, explained why certain methods work better in specific situations, and provided advice on using these skills in professional lab environments.
Setting the Foundation for a Research Career
Having seen BioGrad’s Skills Bootcamp up close, I’m more convinced than ever of its unique value for anyone looking to enter a research field or advance in the sciences. The demand for lab-ready skills continues to grow, and this bootcamp provides an excellent stepping stone for graduates or those who need to develop practical abilities. From DNA amplification to protein analysis, these are the foundational skills that research labs, hospitals, and biotech companies look for in potential hires.
